With an obvious push towards explicit teaching and direct instruction in educational paradigms David has been thinking about how this best fits with geography and its inquiry based approach. He believes some may misinterpret inquiry based learning as discovery learning where teachers just allow students to explore independently. Things like the old SGP and new Geographical investigation tasks under this model lose effectiveness. He is interested in helping teachers explicitly teach the skills of inquiry and how we can leverage explicit teaching within an enquiry framework. As David says, he has learnt from lots of trials and many errors, and he hopes that perhaps he can help others as well.
About the presenter:
David is a passionate classroom teacher in Wollongong with several years of HSC Geography and Legal Studies experience. He has also worked with various EECs in 2023 and 2024 to help develop relevant and valuable resources for the new syllabus. He is an experienced HSC marker for Geography and considers himself someone who has really grappled with what Geography is and how to teach it effectively.
