Presented by Louise Roberts

Discover how water has been the defining force in Seoul’s remarkable transformation into modern megacity in this engaging professional development webinar.
This session explores Seoul’s compelling urban story through the lens of water related factors, demonstrating how the Han River’s strategic positioning originally guided Hanyang’s establishment in 1394 using traditional Korean geomancy principles that value the position of mountains and waterways, creating the foundation for sustained urban growth across six centuries.
The webinar showcases Seoul’s world leading water management innovations, including the comprehensive MoMoMo (Management of all water, for all, by all) philosophy and the advanced Arisu system serving over 10 million residents.
Participants will explore the transformative Cheonggyecheon Stream restoration as a masterclass in urban renewal, environmental restoration, and cultural preservation – demonstrating how cities can reimagine water infrastructure for sustainability and liveability.
Perfect for NSW Geography 11-12 teachers seeking engaging case study material for the Rural and Urban Places focus area, this session provides practical classroom activities, geographic skill development strategies and ideas to embed geographic tools. Learn how Seoul’s water story demonstrates human-environment interactions, urban planning principles, and sustainable development practices that bring geographic concepts to life for students while meeting syllabus requirements with contemporary, relevant content that enhances global awareness and intercultural understanding.
